Quick answer

Measure a similar item that fits you, then compare it with the listing chart using the same units and measurement method. A familiar size letter is not enough.

01

Measure something that fits

Lay a similar garment flat and record the measurements you care about. For tops, use chest width, body length, shoulder width and sleeve length. For bottoms, record waist, rise and inseam. Choose centimetres consistently to avoid conversion mistakes.

02

Read the chart carefully

A chart may use garment measurements or body measurements; those are different. A chest circumference also differs from a laid-flat chest width. Check the chart legend and ask the seller or purchasing service when the method is unclear. Never assume every seller uses the same size system.

03

Choose shoes by useful measurements

Compare the seller chart to a pair that fits. Foot length, insole length and outsole length are not interchangeable. Check the measurement method and allow for the style, socks and any fit notes. A generic EU-to-US conversion is not a guarantee for a specific listing.

04

Verify the received item

If the fit is uncertain, request measured warehouse photos before international shipment. Allow for the seller’s stated measurement tolerance. Record the selected size and keep the size chart so you can compare it with the received item.

05

Work through a size chart without guessing

Suppose a top that fits you measures 54 cm across the chest when laid flat. Its approximate garment circumference is 108 cm. If a listing says “chest 108 cm”, first confirm that it means garment circumference; if it says “chest width 54 cm”, confirm that it is a flat measurement. The two figures can describe a similar width, but they cannot be compared until the method is clear.

Then compare shoulder, length and sleeve measurements from the same type of garment. A close chest match can still produce a different fit if the cut or intended layering differs. Keep the listing chart and chosen option, and ask for a measured warehouse photo if a key dimension remains uncertain.

  • Record whether each figure is body size, garment circumference or flat width.
  • Compare the same units and measurement points.
  • Treat seller tolerances and fabric stretch as separate uncertainties.
YOUR ACTION CHECKLIST

Before you move on

  • Use centimetres throughout your comparison.
  • Check whether the chart describes the body or the garment.
  • Distinguish flat width from full circumference.
  • Keep the size chart and request warehouse measurements if necessary.
COMMON QUESTIONS

A few details to clear up

Should I always size up?

There is no universal rule. Compare the actual chart and intended fit for that particular item.

Is insole length the same as foot length?

No. Check which measurement the seller uses and compare the same kind of measurement.

How to use this checklist

This is an editorial product-research checklist. Measurements, images and current listing details need to be checked for the specific item you select.
